Jean Dubuffet, Vence, France, 1956
Favorite Newman portrait of all time—and that’s not easy to peg down. When I saw this as a kid, richly printed in my father’s copy of Michael Komanecky’s Arnold Newman: Artist’s Portraits, I was fed a morsel of what portraiture might have been about and what it could be and mean for me. It was definitely a driving force in my earliest experiments.
