I was at undergraduate at SVA when I began making subway photographs. NY was a different place then and the subway bore the imprint of the city. It was all out there to see, if we chose to look.
Making pictures in the subways was illegal as well as risky. People wearing Leica’s around their neck…

Sternbach was a resident at Wendover: The Center for Land Use Interpretation, in 2008. In Wendover she created a series of tintype photographs, which instantly “historicize” the landscapes they depict. She examined the implications and effect of salt on the environment as she dug into the region’s history. The series of resulting photographs is called The Salt Effect.
